Hi there. How’s your day going so far? Is it a comfort food kind of a day? Or are you feeling a little adventurous? Perhaps a little of both? Well. Then I have just the thing for you. Furikake. It’s perfect: adventurous (if you have never had it before) and comfort food (well, it is for me after living in Japan for three years!)

Furikake is a Japanese seasoning that is usually served on rice. When I was living in Japan, it was sometimes all I wanted to eat. It sort of turned into my version of Japanese mac’n’cheese. Minimal cooking effort; delicious pay off.

One bonus is that it can be way healthier than mac’n’cheese. I always used brown rice (genmai in Japanese) not only because it is far more nutritious than white rice, but I really do prefer the taste. Typically, furikake is not vegetarian or vegan. So I decided why not just make my own at home?

So I did. And this is what I came up with. Plenty of super flavorful seaweed the nutty flavor of white and black sesame seeds make this seasoning absolutely delicious. In addition to eating it on top of rice you can also sprinkle over salads, add to pasta, or sprinkle it over popcorn. Also, it is worth mentioning that you can stir it into rice and press it into onigiri-which is like the sandwich of Japan. I ate onigiri aaaaaaaall the time when we lived in Japan. (Yup-comfort food!)

If you like furikake, do you use it in any other way? And what special additions do you like to add?
