Meat free meats? That’s right: The Herbivorous Butcher is a Minneapolis vegan butcher shop. No. I am not kidding. It all started with the owners and founders, siblings Aubry and Kale Walch. As their 2014 Kick Starter states, their mission was to create the world’s first ever vegan butcher shop. As of now? Mission accomplished! Their new mission? To continue spreading the plant-based goodness via mail and possibly new store fronts in future. Stay tuned!

Aubry and Kale started selling their meatless meats at the Minneapolis farmers market a few years ago. Not knowing what to expect, they were surprised when they consistently sold out of every product. It was a clear sign to them that they could move forward with their mission to open a brick and mortar store. Their Kick Starter was successful and they officially opened for business in January of 2016.

I know what you’re thinking; is it actually good? Does it taste like meat? Is the texture like meat? My answers: yes, yes, and pretty darn close! They do an excellent job with spicing and flavoring. Honestly. It’s really, really good. So good that one of my vegan friends won’t eat it-not because it’s not good, but because it’s too close to real meat and she just happens to not like meat. The texture is also good, honestly. Plant-based meats today are a far cry ahead of the tofurkey from 20 years ago.

In addition to the meatless meats, they also make cheeseless cheeses. A hard sell for some; especially here on the border of Wisconsin-the land of dairy. But for folks who lived the plant-based life and want a cheese replacer, this is the best I have tasted. In fact, there are some pizzerias right here in Minneapolis that use these cheeseless cheeses on their vegan pizzas. Word has it that they melt really nicely.

While The Herbivorous Butcher is not a sit-in restaurant, they do sell ready-to-go deli sandwiches that are DELICIOUS. The location in Nordeast Minneapolis is perfect for lots of people working in the area to pop over for a delish plant-based lunch.

In addition to the great selection of vegan meats and cheeses, The Herbivorous Butcher also carries other vegan products such a chocolates, ice creams, and many condiments. I was especially excited to see the vegan fish sauce; perfect for the Thai cooking I like to do!

Many thanks to my friend, Laura, who showed me around at The Herbivorous Butcher! Laura runs the social media for them and can be found at her blog: One Girl, Two Cities.

One last note: I just happened to listen to The Dinner Party Download on NPR yesterday and they had a rerun of a show from just couple of months ago. One of the stories was an interview with Aubry and Kale-check it out here!
