When I was a kid, I was informed several times by my siblings that some of the things I liked were weird. In the realm of foods, some of my favorites that were “weird” for a kid to like? Brussels sprouts and grapefruits. I don’t know what it was about them, but I thought they were great. As an adult, they are still favorites. However, I didn’t discover the magic of broiled grapefruit with sugar until much later in life. And yes, I do mean magical! Now, I am looking for new ways to amplify the magic. And that is how cardamom sugar broiled grapefruit was born.

Sugar broiled grapefruit is wonderful. Even for people who don’t like grapefruit, I am not sure how they could convince themselves to not like this deliciousness. They make fantastic additions to breakfast, brunch, or snack time. Really, they taste good whenever you want them! And, super bonus, they are unbelievably easy and fast to make.

Typically, I use plain brown sugar as the topping for broiling the grapefruit. While this stand-by is not to be snubbed, I wanted to try to pair flavors this time. Fortunately, I had recently made up some cardamom sugar-the perfect thing to try! In addition to this, I decided to add some sliced almonds. Toasted almonds are delicious and I thought they would add not only their flavor, but also a nice juxtaposition of texture to the broiled grapefruit.

Ingredients

  • Grapefruits-as many as you would like to produce the number of servings you need
  • Cardamom sugar, about 1-2 teaspoons per grapefruit half
  • Optional-Sliced almonds to garnish

Directions

  1. Set oven to broil.
  2. Cut grapefruits in half. Pre-cut segments with pairing knife.
  3. Place halved grapefruits on baking sheet. Sprinkle cardamom sugar evenly over tops of grapefruits. Top with sliced almonds, if desired.
  4. Broil for a few minutes until the sugar is melted and begins to caramelize. This should take only 3-5 minutes. Keep a close eye on them so they don't burn.
  5. Enjoy!
