Originally, I am from the Twin Cities area of the great state of Minnesota. Back when I was a kid, my parents decided to move up north to the Twin Ports. They met in watercolor art class at UMD…adorable, I know! Even after we moved up north, I still felt connected to the Twin Cities area. I have many fantastic memories of growing up here and going to amazing places like the Minneapolis Institute of Arts (Mia, as they like to call it now).

When my husband and I moved back to this area (back for me-first time for him!) I was excited to reacquaint myself with some of my favorite places from my childhood. Mia was at the top of my list! I went relatively often to wander the galleries, listen to lectures and see special exhibits. When the spring rolled around, I started to see advertisements for what looked like an incredible event: Art in Bloom at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. Of course, I had to go!

Well, I liked it so much, I went twice! Florists had come in and made arrangements corresponding with different pieces from the galleries. The floral and botanical arrangements were inspired from the piece that each florist had chosen. The designs and interpretations were so much fun to see! I brought my camera with and photographed my favorite pieces.

Two years have gone by since the first time I attended Art in Bloom. Last year, in 2016, I realized that I some of my pottery friends were participating in the event. In addition to creating the floral arrangements, they also made special ceramic pieces to hold the flowers. I was intrigued. I realized that anyone could participate who wanted to! And so, this year I am officially a floral artist for Art in Bloom 2017!

If you are interested in participating yourself as a floral artist, this website has all of the information you will need. The process begins every year in January.

If you have never been to Mia, this will be a great weekend to check it out. If you have been there…you should go see it anyway! Especially because our beloved state is giving us ice storms and cold, icky rain this weekend. Art in Bloom will be a fantastic reminder that it is, in fact, spring!

All of these photos are from the 2015 event. Stay tuned for a post with photos from this year-including one of my piece! 🙂

I love the Art in Bloom exhibit at MIA. I am sad that I will be out of town all weekend and probably won't get to see it. Thanks for the recap!

Thanks, Kelly! You should totally check it out if you have time. I just learned today that these Art In Bloom events are held all over the nation at different museums, but the one at Mia in Minneapolis is the biggest one. Who knew?!

I grew up in a suburb of the Twin Cities, but moved away about 17 years ago to a warmer climate. I used to love going to MIA. Thanks for sharing!

So fun!! I'm also from the Twin Cities. I grew up in Woodbury and went to school in Minneapolis at the U of M. I love the MIA so this is so exciting to see! I live in Milwaukee now, and I think Art in Bloom (or maybe something similar) was at the Milwaukee Art Museum as well. These flower arrangements are seriously gorgeous. Thanks for sharing!
